mysql functions undefined

Hello all - my first post, having done a few Access 2007 db at work; the IT Manager told me to get cracking on with MySQL.

I'm an Aerospace Quality Engineer by trade, so it's been a slow start. I can also see this (php) being a good stepping stone for my larger project of home automation, programming micro controllers.

The above guide and a bit of googling got Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.3.4 up and running but have hit a wall with MySQL 5.1.53.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in C:\public_html\sql_test.php on line 2

I'm sure the answer is already out there, I just haven't asked google the right question yet.

Just here to read through the posts, so thanks in advance for any help gleaned.

Your problem is caused by the fact that the "mysql" extension wasn't loaded.

Before you fix that, however, know that this extension has been outdated for quite some time now - you should instead look into using something more current, e.g. [man]mysqli[/man] or [man]PDO[/man].

Thanks for the pointers there Brad, I'll read up on PDO as soon as I've figured out serial port control.

Would be lying if I said it was a breeze but finally managed to get Apache2.2/PHP 5.3.4/MySQL all working ok - The solution was to read all the documentation at least twice.. the install.txt file was the most helpful resource (hardly surprising, I know).

The manual installation worked for me, tried a couple of the installer packages at the pinnacle of hair pulling but these didn't work.w

It's pretty easy to get the installations working if you follow a how-to guide like the ones at http://howtoforge.net. If you are running Debian or Centos, there are a lot of built-in installer commands. You just need to run them in order.
