Create Directory-Based Permalinks? (WP-style)

Hello,

I have only a very rudimentary understanding of PHP, but I'm hoping to poke around in the coding of a script (which I don't have yet, unfortunately) to change the way it handles permalinks. Right now the structure is as follows:

www.site.com/design.php?v=781
www.site.com/profile.php?v=121
etc.

I'm hoping to make it as follows:

www.site.com/design/781
www.site.com/profile/121

Might someone offer me at least some general help, a few indications for how this sort of directory-based permalink structure could be achieved?

Take a look at: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_rewrite.html

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^design/([^/]*)$ /design.php?v=$1
RewriteRule ^profile/([^/]*)$ /profile.php?v=$1

Create a .htaccess and put it in your document root and add the lines above. Its a very simple example
