Displaying Book Pages.

I have php code for displaying book pages in .jpg format.

It has more than 500 pages, this book.

22 chapters.

Currently you can select a chapter and it displays the first page of it and from then you can only go Next Page, Last Page, Next Chapter, Last Chapter.

This is fine on the smaller chapters but one chapter, for instance, has more than 100 pages. It is hopeless expecting people to click on the 'Next Page' link upwards of a 100 times.

I need something to facilitate moving between pages. Perhaps something like a counter you can 'press' on and it rolls over until you take the mouse away... zooming through the pages... Backwards and forwards....

And comes to rest leaving the existing navigation still operational.

Can anyone provide any ideas of what I might do?

Or is there some kind of well known set of algorithms for doing this, displaying book pages or hundreds of images or whatever, the way we had all those well-known sorting algorithms one time?

Or must I move over onto database type technology and have every image as a piece of data in a databse somewhere - mysql ?

i would ocr it and turn it in to text myself, for pages a simple form select would be easy enough, not sure what specific bit you need help with.

Thanks for your reply. But I won't be turning this volume into text. I just did a 200 page volume with a handful of photos and it was mega work. No. It will remain a photograph.

This bit I need help with is getting through the pages to the page you want when you are at the beginning, page 1, of a chapter.

Chapter 7 has 128 pages and clearly needs something better than single clicking on 'Next Page' to get there.

But it is really a general question applicable to any chapter... a method of going quickly through the pages. Backwards and forwards....

The user can see an index at the beginning of the chapter which tells them what sections are in this chapter, maybe three or four, maybe more.

That could cut down the amount of 'single page clicking' required so's I could continue to use this method - if I had some way of enabling them to jump to those places.

I guess that would require me to test within the PHP for page 1 of each chapter (they all begin with page 1) and then cause the php to call a special html page written just for that chosen page that offered a form that collected info on which section/page within that chapter they wanted..

and that could go back to the original php and we just continue...?

That 'special html page' could be an html page with the jpg on it and an image map providing links to whichever section....? would that work?

how about a button to go next 10 , next 50 ect ?

Dead right. I've done it.. had the same happy thought prob'ly while you were writing your post... too easy... I've done 'next 10th page ' and 'previous 10th page' and navigation seems fast and easy enough.
