Help with a replace operation

I've got CSV files to parse, which sometimes contain a value like this for a field:

"something \""fishy\"" here",

How can I replace the \"" with something like \" ?

These files have about 500k lines with 50 fields each, so an efficient way would be great.

Tried a few things but no doubt am missing something obvious ...

To add, I've tried various things, like

$str = preg_replace(array('/\"/', '/\"/'), "~", $str);

(Just using the tilde to see what's going on).

The string becomes:

something \~fishy\~~ here~

additionally you are probably going to need to set_time_limit(0);

I just finished up something like this, and after you get above 50,000 lines the files tend to just say, "forget it, I'm stopping". I ended up having to split the larger files down into smaller (25Mb) files, then looping through each file. Just make sure that when you split the files you grab each line, not just a byte amount.

str_repalce is faster
