[RESOLVED] Need help with ucfirst and rtrim

Can someone show me how to capitalize the first letter from this:

if (isset($_COOKIE["lsvs_user"]))

echo "Welcome back " . $_COOKIE["lsvs_user"] . "<br />";

From one of the PHP help pages I have a sample "echo ucfirst ("hello world)" but wherever I try to place ucfirst in my code it will not work.

And.. I would also like to trim the last letter from "lsvs_user" if I can. Currently I have "Welcome back ralphv" and I would like it to be "Welcome back Ralph"

Now that I have that working.. How could I include this?
echo substr('abcdef', 1);
In my code

if (isset($_COOKIE["lsvs_user"]))

echo "Welcome back " . ucfirst($_COOKIE["lsvs_user"]) . "<br />";

try it, you want 'abcdef' to be ucfirst($_COOKIE["lsvs_user"] the rest should be obvious

Your help with the ucfirst worked perfectly. but to now to include substr('lsvs_user', 1);

I am at a loss as to where or how to place it.

echo "Welcome back " . substr('lsvs_user', 1);ucfirst($_COOKIE["lsvs_user"]) . "<br />";

echo "Welcome back " . substr($_COOKIE["lsvs_user"]);ucfirst($_COOKIE["lsvs_user"]) . "<br />";

And a number of other variations. The first one returns the wrong value, the second an error message on the page. I am at a loss as to where to place the command and what kind of brackets, commas or periods.

It is late and will attack this again tomorrow.

you want to apply both functions to the same string so you wrap one in the other

function_a(function_b($x))

function b runs first on string x, returns x precessed some how
then function a is applied to the output of function b

	$visit = $_COOKIE['lastVisit'];

The only thing you are missing is the comma that separates the arguments in the substr() function

Success.. but there are a LOT of places to put a comma that create error messages. It works now with echo "Welcome back " . substr (ucfirst($_COOKIE["lsvs_user"]),0,-1) . "<br />";
