Binary ?

Is there a way to read the binary of a image or video file and extract information from it?. I have looked into the php function EXIF but it seems limited to only TIFF files and JPEG. I do know how to open a file and read as a binary but i do not know how to encode it to get the information that I am trying to extract.

Hi Ashley,

It seems TIFF files and JPEG files are formatted in a way in which only them can be read and encoded via this function, this is due to the process of compiling. If your trying to encode/decode for a reason and don't already know there is also base64 encoding and decoding via PHP but this may not be what you need just a suggestion.

I tried the base64 encode and decode but the output was not readable. Im looking to see if I can get the header information from the metadata inside the file.

That doesn't tell us anything. As has been mentioned in one of your previous threads, you have to know the format of the file in order to extract information from it.

Woops - ignore that post. I didn't read carefully enough and thought you had said that you do not know how to do that. My apologies.

There's still the problem of defining what it is that you need. "Metadata" doesn't mean anything (as I've said before). You have to know how the file format works and where the information you want is stored.

So how do i go about finding the format of the file?

Erm... wouldn't you know that if you have the file and/or are trying to process it in some way?

I also read that it is possible and like you said that you do need to know the format of the file. I also know that newer cameras today are storing information inside the file which I consider it to be metadata. There got to be away to decrypt the binary code and display the header information stored inside the file.

Well I have a png and a mp4 file that I am using for testing purposes. But I think eventually I will need to try to process it in someway.
