Specifying particular result from an array

Hi all:

I am running a SQL select that returns a few different dates. Let's say 4/1/2011, 4/2/2011 and 4/3/2/11. No problem so far.

I want to build a guest list page. Where the top section would be 4/1/2011 and all the people on the guest list for 4/1/2011 would be listed below the date 4/1/2011. The Same for 4/2/11 and 4/3/11.

So the first SQL SELECT calls the dates which is where I am at. But I am not sure how to take these results (4/1/2011, 4/2/2011 and 4/3/2/11) and place them elsewhere on the page. For example:

4/1/2011

Jim Jones
Norm Smith
Tony Tiger

4/2/2011

Gil Evans
Miles Davis
Chas Parker

4/3/2011

Cleon Jones
Tommie Agee
Al Weis

Once I figure out how to identify each date and can place the date where I want I can then do an additional SELECT to pull in the names below it.

It would be best if you stored the date as a time stamp and used a date function to format it on demand.

The query then could look like:
SELECT time FROM dates ORDER BY time ASC

The function is...
$date = date('m/d/Y', mysql_result($result, 0, 'time'));

Thank you. But I still do not see how I can specify a specific result with this. I guess what am asking is, if I only want to see 4/2/2011 as my result, knowing that there are actually 3 results, how would I do that?

SELECT SHOWDATE FROM TABLE WHERE SHOWID= "12345"

4/1/2011, 4/2/2011 and 4/3/2011 are all valid answers as it is a 3 day show. But I just want to specify 4/2/2011.

Do you mean like getting a set range or specific day?

$start = strtotime('04/01/2011');
$end = strtotime('04/05/2001');
$query = 'SELECT `time` FROM `dates` WHERE `time` >= "'.$start.'" AND `time` <= "'.$end.'" ORDER BY `time` ASC';
$result = mysql_query($query) or die($query);

No. Think the of the dates as strings not date. I just want to set up a list and have the appropriate date at the top of the list.

How do I get the 4/1/11 at the top of the list?

I just figure there MUST a function that can specify a particular result.

Something like

$date[1]="4/1/2011"
$date[2]="4/2/2011"
$date[3]="4/3/2011"

Then I could take $date[1] and place it where I needed it.
