Some 404 errors not recorded

Hello,

Non existent php file requests forward users to 404.php but this error is not recorded in error log file.
Any garbage one places after the domain name is recorded in error log file but those ending in .php

What setting would be wrong?

Well
www.domain.com/smth.php goes to 404.php but the error is not recorded
while
www.domain.com/smth,html goes to 404.php and the error is recorded.
www.domain.com/xuj7axx goes to 404.php and the error is recorded.
What would I expect?
This is an Apache error over php files. I don't know how to fix it
