Use php tags instead of code tags and it should become apparent. And when coding, use an editor that gives you syntax highlighting in the same manner for php code

strings are colored red here. On a side note, the \ character doesn't wish to appear outside of strings on this board.

Thank you for the very prompt reply.

Sorry to be so ignorant but I don't understand your comment. I thought the PHP tag was the bit at the start i.e. <?php I have used that.
Your code snippet has left out the separators /, is that what I should do?

The PHP 'tags' johanafm was referring to are the board's [noparse]

[/noparse] bbcode tags that make your code much easier to read and analyze; please use the tags in the future when posting PHP code.

As for your parse error, note that you've got a missing ending quote on the line preceding the line indicated in the error message. Also note that since you're simply concatenating an entire variable there, you could just get rid of the opening quote to resolve the parse error as well.
