Domain Registration

Greetings,

I have a domain question. I have several but these are the two types I have:

Domain A was registered by Gandi, but they refuse to obfuscate my private information from the Whois listings. That's what they said at least. That's not something I'm in love with at all. In fact, it's a horrendous idea.
Domain B was registered by GoDaddy. They will obfuscate my information, but they reserve the right to sell the domain out from underneath me.

My question is whether or not I can change the registrar rather than the host of a given domain I own.

If that's possible, can anyone recommend a good domain registrar that will both obfuscate my private information and who won't sell my domain out from underneath me some day?

yes, you can transfer one domain from any register to any other, each will have there own process, but they must allow it.

who says godaddy will sell your domain? that would breach the ICANN rules which all domain registers must abide by.

Actually... Fair question. I heard it "through the grapevine" that if my site became popular GoDaddy would sell my stuff out from underneath me. Are you saying that's not true?

Let me rephrase.

"I heard from programmers and people that I presume would know, that if my site got popular enough GoDaddy might either sell the domain to someone else without my consent or otherwise rake me over the coals monetarily."

Is there any truth to that?

GoDaddy is reputable enough such that both possibilities are very unlikely. If you are using their web hosting service, then there might be some truth in "rake (you) over the coals monetarily", e.g., they might request that you upgrade plan or else. Personally, I recommend that you always keep your domain name registrar/reseller separate from your web hosting provider.

I do. I use a separate host.

I can see the sense in that advice though. Thank you. I'll maintain that practice.

careful the CIA implants in my brain are buzzing!

Sounds like rubbish to me and there is an independent dispute process if it did ever happen.

Agree with laserlight, keep separation between registration and host, i register my domains with go-daddy, but they suck as a host (had a client there once)
