[RESOLVED] Classes and $this->

In the process of switching some scripts in class modules (?) as apparently that's my next step in the learning curve.

Okay groovy, as Bruce Campbell would say and immediatly seeing some code advantages.

My problem is as follows

We include a lot of common code, css, etc etc, shouldn't be a problem with classes right? - just include the class file. How do I use $this to refer to an item in a class if there are multiple classes?

This might just be a slight bit of hand holding, as am going to convert a few things, sweat on code implosions, and hope the Western World is threatened by my tinkering on the edges of the net. Dogs could be living with Cats people!

What do you mean "there are multiple classes" ? You can define any number of classes you'd like, but an object can only be created from one class, so your question doesn't really make sense. Perhaps you're talking about class hierarchy, e.g. base vs. extended classes, abstract classes, ... ?

You might have to show us some code to explain what you're asking about.

Next, $this-> is used within the class's definition to refer to the current object. Lets look at a basic example:

class person {
   public $name;

   function __construct($name) {
      $this->name = $name;
   }
   function getName() {
      return $this->name;
   }
}

$person1 = new person("Bill");
$person2 = new person("Courtney");

echo $person1->name;
echo $person2->name;

//this will echo the same thing
echo $person1->getName();
echo $person2->getName();

// this will not work!
echo $this->getName();
echo $this->name;

Hopefully I've illustrated how $this is used within the class definition to refer to a specific instantiation of the object.
