Going back links

I'm a little lost with this and in need of direction.

I want to be able to have a back link which takes the user back to his previous page, which I know how to do. However, I would like to user to have the ability to go back again to their 3rd page.

For example.
Page 1 is visited
Page 2 is visited
Page 3 is visited
Page 4 is visited

On page 4, the user clicks the back button. Which takes the user to page 3. I want the user to be able to click back again and it takes them to page 2.

Right now my script just flips between the last two pages as when they hit back on page 4, page 4 becomes the last page in the array...

Is there any simple way to do this with php along?

few options come to mind, but is the 1-4 relationship fixed, if i visited page 4 via a search engine, would you want a back button that went to 3?

No. It would build as your browsing the site. This is similar to breadcrumb trail, however the pages are dynamic. So I can't label them like all the breadcrumb scripts I've seen.

Not sure if there is a way with a second session variable which compares to my session array of where they have been and check for loops... not sure.

You can use javascript to have a back button. To do this:

1) Create a simple button
2) In the onclick put this "javascript:history.back()"

Here is the Code for it:

<input type='button' onclick="javascript:history.back()" value='Back'/>

or if you have CSS buttons use this:

<li><a href='javascript:history.back()'>Back</a></li>

This will take you back one page at a time.

either of those are interchangeable. You don't need to use css buttons for the href one if you only require a text based link.
