Invite a friend/voucher script help

Hi all.

I'm looking for some advice on this one really. I need to create a refer/invite a friend script that gives the referring account user a £10 voucher for each friend they get to sign up.

So when the new user signs up the referring user is then given this voucher to spent in the online shop.

Can anyone recommend some good starting points? Is there any thing out there open source I can have a look at.

I'm looking to learn how to do this, not just copy and past things.

Well apparently it needs some sort of tracking. As I've never done this before I'm looking for advice on where to get started. And a brief outline of the process. What kind of code, will I need cookie sessions, databases etc?

If anyone can explain how they would go about creating something like this that would be really helpful.
