The real problem is PDF's displayed in a browser. They're slow and clunky more often than not compared to opening the PDF in a standard PDF reader. Also, you can't rely on any sort of PDF browser plugin being installed anyway. I'm probably in the minority, but I disable that plugin purely on security grounds on Windows, and on my Linux machine I don't install the plugin, I just let me default reader deal with it.
