Do's and Don'ts in user management coding?

Hi all,

I've been away from php coding for a few years and I want to build a user login/management system for a project I've dreamed up. I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions about what to do or how to do it, and what not to do. I'm kind of starting over again with PHP as I didn't really do any OOP stuff. There is so much stuff out there now with frameworks and IDE's, and my favorite pet peeve, tutorial articles that don't have a creation date on them to know how new or old they are.

Any suggestions regarding user management or coming back to php would greatly be appreciated.

I've had good results using the DX Auth library with the CodeIgniter framework, but your mileage may vary depending on your OOP skills and whether you have any interest in using CodeIgniter in the first place.
