[RESOLVED] A newbie question about time()

I know its a dork question but I just want to know what that number echoing out represents..

$now=time();

echo $now;

/ how come it returns me this, 1310389083.. and if I keep on reloading it, the last number is always changing(I know it represents seconds)

Is it something like hexadecimals?

It's a UNIX timestamp or epoch time. It's the number of seconds that have elapsed since Jan 1, 1970.
