help creating function

I cant work out how to make this function work..

      UPDATE.. WHERE `something`= $_POST['value1']

 $result1 = SELECT.. WHERE `something` = $_POST['value2']

$result2 = SELECT.. WHERE `something` = $_POST['value3']

if ($something == 1)
{
    update()

echo $result1
echo $result2
}

I have already tried using args, but cant get it to work!

This looks like sudo code so I won't respond with code.

1. Create a connection to database

2. Use open db to make query

3. Close db

4. Return relevant data if necessary.

These are the steps you need to take in order to do an "update" function, which is assumed to a database.

If you have troubles with the steps then post your actual code and we can go from there b

mysql_query('UPDATE tablename  WHERE `something`=  ' . $_POST['value1'] ;

 $result1 = mysql_query('SELECT * FROM tablename WHERE `something` = ' . $_POST['value2'] );

$result2 = mysql_query('SELECT * FROM tablename WHERE `something` =  ' . $_POST['value3'] );

return mysql_fetch_object($result2);

}

   $data =  update() ;

echo '<pre>' ;    

print_r($data);

}
