What makes a great user experience for development tools?

I am doing a bit of market research on dev tools. For this I'd like to get an opinion of what kind of things coders appreciate in their tools/environment.

So please share your thoughts here with the following questions in mind:

• What features do you appreciate in a development tool/environment?
• What are the must haves, nice to haves, rather not haves?
• Please name some good examples
