[RESOLVED] mod_rewrite pattern

Dear All,

One of my worst parts in webprogramming is url rewriting. Now I am looking at a rewrite which I cannot think of how to get going. What I would like it to rewrite every URL which after the domain has:

Either one of the words: university, category, programme, followed by one of more sub-directories. So something like this:

rewrite_rule ^/university || category || programme/(.)/((.)(/))?* index.php?find=$1&$1=$2&rest=$3 [L]

All other strings should just go to
index.php?rest=$1

Anybody who can put this together the right way?

Untested, but this regexp:

^/?(university|category|programme)/((?:[^/]+/?)+)$

is what I came up with.

Alternatively, you could just send all requests that don't map to an actual file or folder to your index.php script and handle all of the routing logic in there instead.

Hi Brad,

Thank for that. What happens when no third argument is available? Will it still rewrite? Or will it ignore the statement? (Not behind my dev machine, and might not be for a few days; so cannot test it right away)

I wrote the pattern to match strings like:

/university/foo
/university/foo/
/university/foo/bar
/university/foo/bar/
# repeat for additional 'subdirectories' ad nauseum

and not:

/university
/university/
