[Q] Help with preg_replace : excluding a pattert

print preg_replace("#File.part1.rar(\S*)?<#i", 'XXXXXXXXXX', $string);

the result is

XXXXXXXXXXbr />XXXXXXXXXXbr />XXXXXXXXXXbr />

I want it to be

XXXXXXXXXX<br />XXXXXXXXXX<br />XXXXXXXXXX<br />

Your pattern

"#File\.part1\.rar(\S*)?<#i"

The first character decides what character(s) is used as pattern delimiter, i.e. where the pattern begins and ends, in this case with #.

Looking at the last couple of characters

"<#i"

it becomes evident that the last character in the pattern is <, since # ends the pattern and i thus is an option, in this case indicating case insensitive pattern matching.

So, if you don't want to remove <, then don't put it in the pattern.
