Div tag z-index

I've got several different Div tags on my page, i also include different pages via require PHP script to make my page when it displays.

Part of my page has a div tag that inside that has a span tag that is being displayed on a mouse over event. it's "cut off" when it's next to the edge of one of the parent DIV tags. HOw can I make it display and show on top. I've tried z-index 0-100 and it does not change anything.

This is my main DIV tag which says what my site width is going to be?

z-index affects only absolutely or relatively positioned elements. Not certain I understand what you're doing since you show no code, but shouldn't you be handling this in the parent elements overflow attribute?
