mysqlauth .htaccess and ipn-listener

Hi phpers love ya,

A client is asking me to build in a course authorization backend for his clients.

Well I lack the background for this, but have a clue as to what I would do; highlight the bad and good please.

I figure to limit access to the course training materials online id use mysql auth in .htaccess

With the clients having their information stored in the mysql db.

Am i headed in the right direction with this... or does some one have a copypasta solution to whack me over the head with?

I forgot to mention;
One majorly fun puzzle that I have been bashing my head against is the creation of the automated membership credential creation script.

A customer buys X amount of courses and through e-payment submits his order.
He then receives access username and password for each X course he bought.

What is the structure of taking the input X courses and running it against mysql db.
