Import Excel date goes from 10/06/2011 to 00/0606/11111111

I am importing a 97-2003 .xls file and I set the column format to Custom > mm/dd/yyyy format. The date gets imported, but is converted from 10/06/2011 to 00/0606/11111111. What is happening to my import?
