Newbie - In need of guidance...

Hey Guys,

All round newbie here (php and this site).

I have spent a lot of time experimenting with html and I am fairly reasonable with it now. I now want to implement php into my site (I think).

Basically, I have an image within a div, that has been sliced up using photoshop into 100 separate images. Each of these images needs to link to a unique url. I could insert these manually, but in the future I intend to use more than 100 images.

What I want to know is, can php automate this? In respect to creating the unique links, assigning them to the image, and then creating the .html pages that they link to, also I would need a template page at the images destination page that would be consistent with all of the other images.

I am not asking for complete code (although would be great, but time consuming for you =D) but at least guidance as to what I need to look for, search for etc.

Oh, dear; does Adobe still want you do do chopped-up-image layouts instead of stylesheet-based ones?

It's not clear what it is you actually want to automate: the generation of the individual pages based on some content obtained from somewhere? The generation of the image map to link to existing pages (in which case, you don't need to chop the image up?

Well this is it, If there is a more convenient or better way of doing it then I'm all ears.

Ill try and explain this a bit better.

I have an Image, and I want to slice this image up into 100 equal slices/images (a grid). Each portion of this grid will link to a new Unique page. I could manually add the href to each image and create the new destination pages but I want an automated way for this to happen.

If it is a grid and you know that you would like to something like /pages/0x0, /pages/0x1, etc. then you should use stylesheets as Weedpacket recommended. Maybe a good anchor tag with a block display that floats left with a specific width and height.

You could then run a loop through the specified number of rows dropping in the link, clearing left after the last column.

Couple of things though, if the images are always going to be the same size then you can just hard code the information. If you had to look up the image dimensions then it would be a little more complicated.

This is very feasible to do. CSS and a good loop, assuming you know where the links are always going.

@ I think I know what your getting at, but I am quite unsure on what to do. Is there any chance you can explain a little deeper what to do. Please excuse my lack of knowledge, I am trying my best. 😃

Weedbacket mainly recommended stylesheets in case he was chopping up images to be used for layout purposes.

If all you want is a grid of clickable areas in an image, all you really need is an image map. In other words, a minimum of 3 elements! Although, for the clickable areas to form lines, stripes or a grid, you'd obviously need more than one area element. To do this with several anchors and chopped up images is as good as it is to use chopped up images for layout purposes.

If you actually check the links provided by Weedpacket, instead of disregarding the excellent information he provided you with, you'd know this by now, and you'd also know that he provided you with the means to provide graphical feedback to the user so that they'd know what parts of an image are clickable (using CSS).
