PHP Page Trying To Open As Application/File?

I'm having an issue that my php-coder friend isn't even sure the answer to so I've been told you guys are a big help. I'm about to use an old template to make a much broader site for my employers restaurant. This is the very simple layout that it's going to be based off of, and the entire site works very well:

So I tried moving the website, as is, to a new server. I renamed what needed to be renamed in the header.php... This is where the new site will be.

Why would it try to open as an application? It's the exact same .php file with a couple of non-major changes. I looked all through the code and there is nothing out of the ordinary to my amateur eyes.

Here's the header with the correct full-path changed: http://garibaldisrestaurant.com/new/header.php

Trying to think of what else might be affecting it.
I think it probably will be a server issue with our host right? If you tell me to do SSH/linux stuff, go slow cause I rarely run shell commands like that 🙂

Is PHP installed and running on that web server?

Oh good question, I've never actually had to deal with that. Would that be totally up to my hosting provider or is there a way i can manually do it? Im guessing the former, thanks for the response

I'd start by asking your hosting provider, as it looks to me like the web server is not running PHP.

This leads me to another real quick question about this: Im on Windows, but I'd love to alter these websites remotely without having to be connected to the net. Is there any program I can use to view PHP files on my computer without needing to be on a server?

And since I've never been an advocate of the *AMP pre-packaged solutions, I'll also suggest the route of going directly to the suppliers of the software products involved, such as a webserver (Apache is a popular choice), PHP, a SQL DBMS (MySQL is again a popular choice), etc.

I opted to take an old unused computer -- and these can be ancient slow things -- and I installed Ubuntu linux on it (free, user-friendly install) and I just plugged it into my LAN. Installing Apache and PHP on it is a lot easier than you might think. Figuring out how to do it also really improved my ability to troubleshoot problems and configure servers. If you are considering this option, let me know and I'll talk you through it.

Given the power of modern-day desktops, there's really no need to even opt for the separate PC if you really must use a nix O/S for whatever reason. I, for example, have an Ubuntu install setup in a VMware virtual machine. "Booting up" my nix box is as simple as a couple of mouse clicks on my main Windows desktop.

But to be fair, I only use it on rare occasions, since most of my work these days is rather platform-independent.

brad, that sounds nice. Is that free software?

I kind of like my other machine though -- having a true separate linux box lets me get behavior which is true-blue linux and also keeps my primary desktop free of all those daemon processes and such.

And sorry to hear about Tim. I owe my livelihood to this site. 🙁

Eh, not exactly, although there are definitely free alternatives (such as VirtualBox).

Not sure what you mean; my virtual machine is running a full install of Ubuntu. Unless you're doing driver development or something more low-level than PHP/MySQL/etc., I'm not sure you'd ever know the difference.

Plus, plenty of affordable dedicated hosting options are actually dedicated virtual packages.

Eh.. guess I'm a bit spoiled in that regard. An i7 processor and boatloads of low-latency RAM has made multitasking pretty much a non-issue. :p
