Look at the User-Agent header sent by the client ($_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'], if supplied at all), and look for some defining characteristic(s) that identify whether or not the browser is being used on a mobile platform.
If that doesn't help, try viewing one (or several) of the >2 million search results on Google for more info.
