Hey,

So I am completely new to PHP and new to coding as a whole, (although small amounts of experience).

I was just wondering if anyone could advise on any really good books for beginners?

I know that practice is the best way to improve but my work means I'm currently out and about a lot and would just love to have a good book I could work through.

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Not about PHP, but a good book for any programmer to have in his/her library: The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas.

Thanks a lot for your advice, will certainly get hold of a copy.

Are there any other essential books for begginers to programming off the top of your head?

      Thanks again

unless it's been heavily updated I wouldn't recommend that Welling and Thompson book - seemed out of date when I read it 7(?) years ago
but I guess it covers things methodically and it doesn't waste space by repeating itself (unlike a lot other books).. so you could do worse

I don't know what is the best current book, but a good place to poke around and see what others have said about them is http://oreilly.com/php/index.html. O'Reilly books generally are good values, in my experience, but you still want to read the descriptions and reviews to get an idea which ones sound right for your level.
