[RESOLVED] Yet another mod_rewrite question

I've searched for this but I wouldn't recognise the answer if it jumped up and bit me.

I've got pages like:

http://www.mysite.com/content.php?id=85g=4/Local-Activites

and I want to rewrite them as:

http://www.mysite.com/Local-Activites

I can hard code this for individual urls in my htaccess file, so -
RewriteRule ^{Local-Activites/?$} content.php?id=85g=4

But how do I do this dynamically for all the pages in my database?
I'm hoping a kind soul will have an easy answer!
Meanwhile, I'm still trawling the tutorials with a marshmallow mind and glazed eyes - a bit tired today.

i think you would need to add more to the url to make it work.

Eg: http://www.mysite.com/Local-Activites/85/4

http://www.mysite.com/Local-Activites-85/4

You need some way of differentiating the data you want to pass in the url

Isn't the title at the end of the url enough?
Eg urls like -

http://www.mysite.com/content.php?id=85g=4/Local-Activites
http://www.mysite.com/content.php?id=86g=5/Ice-Skating
http://www.mysite.com/content.php?id=87g=6/Roller-Blading

Should be rewritten to:

http://www.mysite.com/Local-Activites
http://www.mysite.com/Ice-Skating
http://www.mysite.com/Roller-Blading

Hard coding this in the htaccess file works:

RewriteRule ^{Local-Activites/?$} content.php?id=85g=4
RewriteRule ^{Ice-Skating/?$} content.php?id=86g=5
RewriteRule ^{Roller-Blading/?$} content.php?id=87g=6

I just need the dynamic version.

How would mod_rewrite know what id and g to set for a given name unless you hard coded it? That's why he's saying you need more than the title to the url OR you have to change your content.php to display solely on the article name

I see what you mean.

I've done this version, it's not as clean as I'd liked:

http://www.mysite.co.uk/content/85/4/Local-Activites

the htaccess is:
RewriteRule ^{content/([0-9]+).*([0-9]+)/(.+)$} content.php?id=$1g=$2/$3 [NC]

I'm not sure if I can get rid of the 'content' can I?

But I have a flash slideshow on those pages that's not showing. I've changed all the flash urls to absolute urls but no images in the slideshow appear. Images on the pages appear as normal.

You could, if you assume that transforming any URL that follows the pattern of "numbers, slash, numbers, slash, (any character forming a title)" is alright. If it's unlikely that you have ever or will ever have a need to use such a pattern for a different purpose, then sure, the 'content/' part is superfluous.

Are you sure there isn't a path you missed? Otherwise, not much else we can suggest with the given info (or the lack thereof, rather).

The flash code is:

<object data="http://www.mysite.co.uk/jpgrotator.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="972" height="200" align="middle">
  <param name="movie" value="http://www.mysite.co.uk/jpgrotator.swf" />
  <param name="wmode" value="opaque" />
</object>

In the page source, there's no difference in the pages accessed via the full url or the cleaned up url.
The jpgrotator.swf calls an xml file (also with absolute paths) I suspect that's where the problem is but since it's a third-party swf file, I can't debug it.

Fixed!

Not a php or htaccess problem but it might be of some use to someone - I had to append a line of code to find the xml file:
