I'm wanting to purchase a new hosting package (before I've had access to a friends one).

I want to be able to host several sites, mysite.com and myfriendsite.com for example without having my URL for my friends site, how do you do this? what am I looking for in a package?

Well, that depends entirely on how your hosting provider operates; what they provide, how they provide it, and what forms you have to fill out to get them to do so. Some may regard multiple domain names as a very strong hint that you're trying to provide multiple web sites and will want to bill accordingly. Others may offer packages that let you register say half a dozen domains in the one account.

this is usually referred to as a 'reseller' account
-even if you are not planning on setting up a business to resell hosting, this is still the usual description

then you get a choice of shared hosting or vps/vds hosting or dedicated server - which is another topic - I'm guessing you probably want to go for 'shared'

FWIW, the hosting company I use is running a sale on their "pro plan" for US$3.95/month (12 or 24 month plans), which includes unlimited domains: http://www.ipower.com/ipower/web-hosting/unix-compare-plans.bml. I've been using them for several years now, and though they had some problems a few years ago, for the last couple years they've been quite good for me.
