Funny things bosses/manager/owners say....

When replying to the thread about web dev. vs software dev. - It reminded me of the funny things my boss always says.

The other day I showed them a new site and I had link at the bottom: 'site map' and he looked at me and asked why would we want to have a link to our warehouse locations, get rid of it. I tried to explain but it was lost battle.... for that meeting anyways.

Does anyone else run into this?

Also, to my bosses credit - we're a wholesaler - we're not a software lab or web dev. firm...so, It's pretty often I get some weird questions.... That and they throw excel documents at me... i'm not too handy w/ excel. I guess that's what Dr. Google is for.

My direct supervisor is 68 and asks me how to attach a file in gmail at least once per week. I'm the only person at my company who knows what PHP, SQL, drivers, etc are... The things I hear on a daily basis STILL amaze me after almost 2 years heh.

Thought they do refer to me as "The Computer Guru" which is pretty nice

I work at a small web design company and my boss is two years younger than I am and has a developer background, so I never get to hear these things. 🙁

A good few years ago the production manager, at a company I was at, asked me "what's the difference between Flash and an operating system?"

Needs a zen like answer that one!

I don't mean any ageism by it. We have a lady here who is 80 and I never have to show her something more than once, she is on the ball all the time. I think she's amazing because she can really understand anything if you explain it to her. However, I have found that she's a rarity (and retiring next week 🙁).

Today I was informed I'm building a site for all adoption workers to be able to utilize for tracking their open cases, including but not limited to how long they have been in the foster system, how much and what type of recruiting is being done, and any and all official contact regarding the child. They should also be able to message people working on the same child, working at the same county or just one on one and a fully public message board. The site should have news and stats (where this content is supposed to come from I don't know!) as well as some other things, like user management per county, per case, and per contract. And this is something they think is "just a simple site, that shouldn't take much work" >.<

sounds like a project I did last year - though was for carers and their employers, it was partially like a dating site as it had to have 'matching' facilities, as well as messaging and tracking who contacted who - took about 3 months all in and they are still coming up with additions
- part of the difficulty was getting a definition of exactly what they wanted

That's only part of the problem, the other side of the same coin is getting them to understand how long it takes.

ahh yes... Timing!!! I think my manager thinks the viewport is pretty much a PSD file! They have me creating a custom CMS site for a one of our departments and they think 1-2 weeks is plenty of time for it to be tried and tested and launched :\

Speaking of age... I don't know the age of our RPG programmer(who started w/ COBOL) but she is solid as a programmer and picks-up new technology very fast... minus PHP. She's knocking out SQL queries all day now! I hope to be learning at her pace when I reach her age. After all, learning is the fountain of youth.
