[RESOLVED] Preg_replace help

I am really not getting a proper grasp on regex.
I am trying to clean up tags so that...
</h?></p> would become </h?>

Where I am with the code is various versions of...

$text = preg_replace("@(</h[1-9]></p>)@i", "@(</h[1-9]>)@", $text);

This throws gives me...
</h?><p>>
as well as tossing in an extra > in other unexpected places.

I'm totally hopeless!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
