Here at the office our ISP just contacted us, saying that some equipment has failed and they need to reclaim the /28 that serves our office and mini-data-center.

I guess I've not enough knowledge to know just what sort of a failure could cause this? We'll have to change the DNS entries on about 20 names ... and wait for them to propagate for who know how long...

Any thoughts?

Well, the only doubt I have on your theory, Brad, is that they're giving us an exact duplicate of the /28 inside the same "Class B" (pardon my out-of-date parlance, please).

Well, that, and the fact that a traceroute from North Carolina to Missouri shows that there may actually be a failure between our upstream folks and their upstream folks somewhere around Atlanta.....

The ISP may have had a failure in some upstream equipment that forced them to allocate different IP addresses, including your block. Or maybe they changed their upstream provider, which would also mean IP changes for you. I've had 5 business static IP's here for many many years and two or three times my ISP has changed my IP's.

Hmm; management is pretty uncomfortable with such things until we move all sites out of the building. We had "big Bell" since time immemorial until November, and as far as I know that /24 had been ours since the beginning. Hopefully this won't happen too often....

Hi if your company own the Ip addresses they are asking you to give up, I would personally start asking more questions as to why. Due to the fact that Ipv4 has now been depleted and replaced with Ipv6, any Ipv4 addresses owned by company are and will increase in value, so as a sound investment keep them or at least offer to sell them back to the ISP.

Well, I'm afraid no one thought about that. Of course, I'm not sure we ever "owned" IP addresses, although last year we did trade 128 of them in for 14 .... 🙁

At least we're paying a lot less now 😉

Also begs the question of why no one had thought NAT worthy of attention before that time ... 😃
