URL Rewrite without using .htaccess

for example if the existing url is like "www.example.com/product.php?name=xyz&q=service" ,I want to change it to "www.example.com/product/name/xyz/q/service"

But I dont want to use .htacces. How can I do it using php functions only?

thanks for your reply,,and I am trying it without .htaccess because my team leader has told me to do so.

Very few things are ever impossible, but they can certainly be improbable or really really hard.

For example, you could create folders for every product, name, etc. Could that involve creating thousands or even millions of folders? Definitely!

... or you could just create one single .htaccess file. 😉

It is, after all, the web server's job to relate URLs (whatever you want them to look like) to resources; so it's the web server that you should be explaining which resource "www.example.com/product/name/xyz/q/service" is supposed to refer to.

Incidentally, Apache best practice is to not use [font=monospace].htaccess[/font] files; they're only a fallback for when you can't get at [font=monospace]httpd.conf[/font] directly (which typically means a shared hosting environment).

One possible way which I would not recommend is to use a custom 404 handler. You just can't post to those 404 pages since post data would be lost.
