Mod_rewrite, foo=test to bar=test?

I don't generally play with mod_rewrite (or .htaccess) for that matter. My philosophy is to get the URI correct the first time. So, this is a noob question, I'm sure, if you're familiar with the syntax for that module.

My problem: I've got a product installed from a vendor that broke their backwards compatibility, and I need to rewrite a var in the query string.

#somevendor sucks
RewriteRule %{QUERY_STRING} thefoobar=foo
RewriteCond justfoo=foo [R]

This seems to break Apache. Hints? I'd really like to fix this soon; a broken link went out in a promotional piece this morning...

Is this parameter the only one in the query string, meaning you could rewrite the entire query string, or do you need to leave the rest of it intact?

RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (?:^|&)thefoobar=([A-z0-9%._~-]*)
RewriteRule (.*) $1?justfoo=%1 [QSA]

The above would not replace 'thefoobar' with 'justfoo' - it would simply append the latter onto the existing query string.

Remove the [FONT="Courier New"][QSA][/FONT] flag and it'll replace the entire query string with the 'justfoo=foo' parameter.

Thanks. It's just part of a rather long QS.

Last I knew, the app this was calling was "encoded" to prevent modification. I checked again and this latest version seems to be human readable ...so instead I just hacked the code and inserted the old var where it needs to be. OTOH, it'd be Real Nice to have a better grasp of Rewrite. Thanks for the assist. :-)
