Match Syntax to remove middle zeros

I'm stuck on the best way to remove zeros from the middle of a alpha-numeric string. The thing is, I only want to remove zeros that fall between letters and numbers, but not zeros that are leading, ending or between other numbers.

So:

ABC000123 >> ABC123
ABC0010101 >> ABC10101
0ABC010 >> 0ABC10

Can anyone help me with match syntax to do this?

translated into a regular expression might look like this:

/(?<=[A-z])0+(?=[1-9])/

so you might consider using something like [man]preg_replace/man to replace those zeros with an empty string.
