safe_mode not found in php.ini

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me here. I have installed PHP 5.4.3 by compiling from the source onto my Ubuntu Server 12.04. Then, I was trying to find safe_mode or safe_mode_gid in php.ini but could not find them. I think when I run ./configure, I did not include --enable-safe-mode option. My question is whether or not I could just add those two safe_mode to php.ini like that or I need to re-run ./configure with --enable-safe-mode option. The idea here is to trying to make PHP more secure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry for not making myself clear in defining the term "more secure". Basically, I am building my own mail server with apache, PHP, MySQL so I need to make the server secure against any malicious attacks or intruders from outside. I will use PHP to build web applications for my web page. And I am still learning my way around PHP.
