EMERGENCY: Can Mysql "overhead" data be recovered?!?

Hi;

Something weird happened. My user login table (names and password stuff) is suddenly showing only 49 rows instead of the 3000+ that it had. When I inspect iit in phpMyAdmin, it shows size=824.5 KiB and overhead=715.2 KiB. I suspect the overhead may be my missing rows. Is there a MySQL command that will recover this infor in any way?

I'm in a bit of a panic.

Why not just recover from a backup?

...because I am an idiot and don't have any current ones. After ten years of reliability I have been lulled into carelessness about this.

Theoretically nightly backups do exist, however the server administrator folks who have all authority over such stuff in my organization are all high-flyin' Oracle types and the existence of MySQL on the system is something they could not possibly be less interested in. (I get to use a MySQL database because no one else in the organization seems to trust it or care about it). They are hard to contact and/or get support from.

Okay. Thanks for the information.

I am constructing a new table based on the design of the old and filling it with stuff that should work for the mass of my users. Luckily I designed it to insist that users use their company username (I do not have access to the corporate passwords or login method...they need a different password for "MY" applications).

Once the new table is pre-filled I should be able to rename or drop the old one and put the new one in place with the old table name. That should work.

It's very possible it's a phpMyAdmin fault - export the table and open it locally to check.
Not sure exact procedure of restarting phpMyAdmin

because phpMyadmin frequently does exactly that on different installs of mine - as it's local I don't care I just restart Apache
- for all I know it could be some of the javascript crashing

Maybe you should remind them that MySQL is part of Oracle....

I think they're the type of people who hardly acknowledge that fact, and probably scoffed at the idea that Oracle acquired MySQL.

They're probably the same type of people who don't care about a fact that I learned at my MySQL class which I took at Oracle in Chicago: According to the instructor there is 2-3times as much data stored in MySQL as there is in Oracle - which makes it also more widely used IMO.
