Mod rewrite Hyphens and Urls

RewriteRule ^([A-Za-z0-9-]+)-([A-Za-z0-9-]+)-([A-Za-z0-9-]+)-([A-Za-z0-9-]+)-([A-Za-z0-9-]+)/?.html$  nhl.php?cty=$1&t=$2&w=$3&l=$4&d=$5     [L]

this produces /montreal-canadians-1-2-dateexample.html <--ok works fine..

but when its /toronto-maple%20leafs-1-4-dateexample.html

/los%20angeles-kings-1-5-dateexample.html

anyone know how to correctly code for the %20 to be - hypens also.

I tried all kinds of variations and it usually comes up page unfound.

str_replace works to add in the hyphens between maple-leafs and los-angeles

after myphp code

/toronto-maple-leafs-1-4-dateexample.html

/los-angeles-kings-1-5-dateexample.html

but the modrewrite code above doesnt know how to handle it when not all teams or citys are two words.... and then returns a page unfound, i think this is where im missing a key part..

anyone run into this? I searched the whole forum and nothing.

Sounds like you need to add space to your character range... Although to be honest I don't think this rewrite is what you're looking for. You have dash as the specified separator but then it also appears as each character set. So if you actually have part of a section containing a dash you'll get unexpected results. It works in your example because you have 4 dashes in the URL and you require 4 dashes to to match the pattern, but if you had 5 dashes which sub-pattern should it put the extra dash with?

I used the - because I tried just adding maple-leafs in the database with the hyphens.. but why all the extra work each time a two word team or city comes up.

when you create the url to the page can't you use a different charater (e.g an underscore) for word spaces?

you'd then need to add that character in the rewrite:

A-Za-z0-9_-

but as Derokorian says if the dash is the delimiter then you are also using it to split pairs of words so its performing two functions and conflicting with itself

maybe the pattern would be easier to control if you separate the teams from the dates

yep your totally right.. and google considers _ as pairs/combine words and - as keywords in urls. So what your saying completely makes more sense.
