I have a bunch of number like

54.21234

I want to show the first decimal place without rounding. How can I do this?

One way might be to use [man]is_int/man to determine if the number is an integer; if it is, just use/echo the number. If it isn't, use one of the [man]printf/man functions with a format like '%.1f' to shorten the float to the first decimal place.

Can't edit damnit.. Anyway,
$output = number_format("2234.23423", 1, ".","");

^ forgot the 4th. It also creates your decimal .0 if it doesn't already exist

...which could be misleading or just plain incorrect, depending upon the actual requirements/need ("2" and "2.0" are not the same).

He has 2 options-one with number formatting, and yours which trims the string.

99% of the time people who ask for cutting down to 1 or 2 places do it for aesthitcs and preventing run off, so if it's for aesthetic reasons (display) you want it all uniform and I gave him that option.

People who are working with math that require knowing the difference between 2/2.0 would already know how to do that... no?

Another clue in favour of the "this is a cosmetics problem" hypothesis is the bit about not wanting to round off.
