tar & gz files using PHP

I have lots of files I want to tar, then gz

I think this can be done via php and then presented to the user for downloading..

but is there any way I can display some form of progress bar whilst the tar & gz is happening ?

Probably, but I don't know OOTOMH what it is.

Since you say "display", we'll assume you mean "to the browser and its user" ... generally for this you'd want AJAX. You might look at some of these.

If this is going to take a long time, how about asking for the users email address and sending them an email when its done, this way they dont have to sit around waiting on your page.
