variable with 's display in a text input only has partial value.

I try to display a $variable, with 's in it, in a text input box, but only part of the value display.

$variable = 'Lowe's Home Improvement';
echo '<input size=45 name=variable value=' . $variable . '></td>';

Output Display:

Lowe's

Anyone know why? and how to fix it?

Your HTML markup is invalid; all attributes' values should be quoted.

Additionally, you don't do any escaping to ensure that the variable's value won't break your HTML markup. To that end, you'll want to consider something like [man]htmlentities/man.

True for XHTML, not necessarily true for plain old HTML (as long as there are no spaces or other things to confuse the parser 😉 ). That being said, I do believe you should quote them all anyway, just to avoid problems and to keep the mark-up forward-compatible. Anyway, as Brad says, htmlentities() or htmlspecialchars() will take care of this specific issue (check the optional parameters to make sure you use the one that will escape all quotes).

I was going to throw that caveat in there, but to be honest, I thought that unquoted attribute values were no longer acceptable as of HTML5. Apparently that's not true. At any rate, I changed the helping verb in my post above to be more accurate.
