We need a topic on this I think but anyway.

I'm in the hunt for a clients new hosting package. they will have a small basic website. can someone recommend a good basic but reliable hosting company?

The one I use myself if complex and offers way more than I need which costs more than they need to pay.

Simple cpanel admin, IMAP email, web stats, FTP 30+GB storage & bandwith will do.

fwiw: make sure you are getting what you expect
there's a large company in the UK who seem good until you notice :
smtp mail is extra
cron is not supported
it costs money to transfer out (of course you won't register a domain name with them, but others might)
servers don't run Apache, so mod_rewrite not available - you have to use their system's version for which they provide just a short web page of help

.. many others in the UK have reputation for poor service and reliability
and beware the tiny operations which can have problems recovering from outages of one sort or another
- cheap is usually cheap for a reason

Thanks, many posts and threads are old and go into depth of specific topics. As I said it would be nice to have a hosting topic so we could discuss providers etc.

I can't even find some geniune providers out there, I found www.hostgator.com but they seem to be more of the "cowboys" of hosting. I was told networksolutions.com are good and are recommended. not the cheapest though so any other competitive names would be nice.

Just some names would help.

Well I don't know about hostgator, but I personally had a poor experience with network solutions. I currently use InMotion Hosting and I'm pretty satisfied with them.

I love RootBSD.net, a division of Tranquil Hosting. But I like FreeBSD, root access, and I don't need hand holding, CPanel, etc.

I have experience with LunarPages also. I'd give them a "B", probably. Good support people. Pricy though, compared to RootBSD, and for some reason first byte time is about 4x-8x behind RootBSD, even if the test is run from the West Coast. 😕

The hosting review list gives half a dozen different hosting providers. (I'd look at the details of my browsing history to see just how long it took me to do that, but opening and querying the database would probably take longer than the search itself.)

Since there is an overlap, another list to look at would be the authorised .nz registrars.

I can recommend you Arvixe web hosting, I got several websites hosted there for few years and am very pleased with their service and support which is reachable 24/7 through live web chat and tickets.
They also have decent prices and offer plenty of resources.

umm is this even supposed to be in a php discussion forum? Your better hope is to go to webhostingtalk.com, which is specialized in the discussion of hosting packages. I am using webhostingbuzz myself, its pretty good so far. You are gonna get all different kinds of answers by asking different people, I've done that before and the only way to figure out is to try one on your own.

Thankfully, it doesn't have to be deployed for public consumption; accuracy is valued over speed.
