setting up "From:" when sending form data to an email.

I am having a big issue pertaining to the From: field when my form data is sent to clients email.

When my clients form is filled out and sent to their email address it is currently showing up as webmaster@...

I need it to show the customers (person filling out the form) name or email in the From: section in their inbox instead of webmaster@...

Also, nn automatic "order received" message is sent to the customer once an order is placed. When this message is sent it is also showing up as From: webmaster@...

In this instance I need it to show my clients name or email in the From: field in the customers inbox rather than the webmaster@...

Here is my current code.

Depending on your mail server configuration, you may have to use a From email address that is a valid address on that server (in part as a spam relaying prevention). If that's the case, you could try using a Reply-To header, instead of a From.

Hey NogDog,

This is exactly what is happening with the server and their spam relaying prevention. The code works on another server. The explanation from my host was exactly what you mention that the email address has to be a valid address on that server. However they said they were unable to help me adjust my code so it would work 🙁

Three issues:

1. The "From" header doesn't have to be an address on your domain. If your host provider artificially adds this constraint, consider dropping them and finding a better host.

2. The "Sender" header does have to be an address on your domain. You might want to try adding this header as such.

3. There's a very big problem with these two statements:

   $from = 'From: You <[e-mail]>';
   $headers .= 'From: ' . $from . "\r\n";

   If you can't spot it, try echo'ing out the e-mail headers and seeing how that ends up looking.

Hey Brad,

Thanks for the help. I will consider #1 and try #2. As for #3, I will not be able to figure this out. I do not "really" understand php as I am a designer who partnered on a project with a friend that knows php. All his script works great except for this one thing. He insists it should work, as he has tested it on his server and says it works as requested. I transfer it to my server and it falls apart. I haven't been able to get any help from the host and I have so many sites hosted with them it would be a nightmare to transfer them all somewhere else.

This is why I turned to this forum.

You might mention to your friend that he needs to be making sure his scripts work on your server, not his own.
