Should have left well enough alone. As they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
After doing this "upgrade" to 12.10 I now have no Ubuntu desktop, only that stupid wallpaper of the Chinese forbidden city. No icons, no toolbars, no nothing. My guess is that the makers of Ubuntu are living somewhere inside that city and have forbidden me any entrance. Say what you want about Microsoft, I've never had any issues with their upgrades. And that includes moving all the way from Win 3.1 to Win95, Win98, to XP. (This machine came with Win7 pre-installed, so I can't count that version.)
I also got errors during the upgrade that "not all files could be installed" or something akin to that. WTF? You would think that the "upgrade" (which turned into a de-grade) would be smart enough to stop itself and at least give me some options of continuing, or not. Or how about an Ubuntu system restore? Nope, just this dopey picture of China now, and nothing else. Maybe that's the price we have to pay because these things are made over there. There's probably some little Chinaman over there laughing his ass off right now.
Now then, plenty of advice is out there on how to resolve this issue. But all of the advice presupposes that I have access to my Ubuntu desktop so I can schlep, grep, flep or prep my way thru these fixes. That's just fine, considering I now have no way of running any commands. Reminds me about the advice you get from some of these meat heads about, "If you can't connect to the Internet, just go to this website and we'll show you how to fix things." :glare:
In conclusion, my advice about this upgrade is -- DON'T. The best thing I can say is that at least it didn't fukup my Windows partition. And I'd like to get this little Ubuntu bastard off my H-D completely, but I don't dare go down that road for fear of what might happen next. I can hear that Chinaman, "You fukee up now, you do that, just you wait see how much more we fukee you up!" 😃 I'll just do without the 30 gigs of H-D space (that this dopey installation initially limited me to) from now on. And looking back on things, I'm glad I was limited to just 30 gigs for the partition. I'll just offer up that wasted space to the Ubuntu gods and hope that they leave me alone now.
