mail() function

Hello,
I made a e-mail verification php script for a school project, but i can't send the email. It doesn't give an error, but i don't get the sent email. I read on the internet that you somehow have to configure a server... I am using xampp and i want to send that email from the localhost if it's possible.
This is the PHP code:

$rand=md5(rand());
$mess="Your account have been registered. To activate click <a href='localhost/atestat3/activ.php?x=" . $rand . "'>here</a>.";
$mess=wordwrap($mess, 70, "\r\n");
mail($_POST['email'], 'Activation', $mess) or die(mysql_error());

You might want to look into using something like PHPMailer, so that you can make use of its SMTP class, allowing you to send the email via any mail host you have access to via SMTP.

Just as a point of order the die(mysql_error()) isn't going to give you anything because mail() isn't a function of mysql.
