[RESOLVED] Print_r ($_SESSION);

This one should be easy:

I've been using " Print_r ($_SESSION); " to keep track of what's kept in my sessions array. It prints out one long line of text with no cr/lf 's at all; just a long string of the array members.

Awhile back, I had it printing with line feeds so each member or the array appeared on its own line a la:

Array
$d=>...
$e=>...
...

and so on. I've been looking for two days and can NOT find the format of the command that caused print_r to print a nice, neat list as I tried to show above instead of just the one, long line.

Can anyone tell me how to get back the list display for print_r?
Or a link or anything usable?

I'd sure appreciate it! Not the end of the earth but it's sure a nicety for TS'ing things.

No, it doesn't. Try it out on the command line and you'll see that the line breaks are (and always have been) there.

Perhaps you're simply trying to view the output as rendered by your web browser? Don't forget, repeated whitespace and line breaks are ignored in HTML markup. Either view the raw output from the server or surround the output with HTML's <pre>..</pre> tags.

Incidentally, XDebug modifies [man]var_dump[/man] so that the output is pretty-printed (and also adds a lot of information to error messages).

Well, if they're there, they sure aren't showing up in anything I'm looking at; with my browser and in the error log, as line feeds or even the code for same.

Yes, it's my browser I'm mostly referring to. Just for grins, I tried it on a remote server and it prints the name; Plain Text, one long line without any kind of list format.
Repeated whitespace and line breaks I'm aware of, but with white space, it still should allow a single space, just not multiples, right?

The HTML's <pre>..</pre> tags however, does seem to do the trick, so thanks a lot!
More to learn <sigh>.

Space? Yes. Line break? No; those are always ignored (unless instructed otherwise, e.g. via using <pre>..</pre> tags).

Simple example; this HTML markup:

<p>Line #1
Line #2
Line #3
Line #4
</p>

will produce this when rendered (as copied and pasted from my browser):

Line #1 Line #2 Line #3 Line #4

I visited xdebug to read a little more about it. I'm running a VC6 PHP so the rcommended VC9 and 11 aren't going to work for me.

Plus, when I tried to install a VC9 version of XAMPP and PHP (from Apache Friends) on my win 7 Home Premium, even though I installed the recommended program (forget what it was now), first, as was recommended. I couldn't get it to work no matter what I tried.

Off the top of your head, would you say I'd be wasting my time to download some of the older versions that were of VC6 ancestry?
Or upgrade to VC9 type? Seems like the PHP that comes with XAMPP was more advanced than what my remote server offered. But I figured I could still go back and install the same PHP version, which was available as both VC6 and VC9.

Don't go to any trouble to respond to this: I don't feel like messing much with my setup since it's working and my local PHP matches what's on my remote server? I think it's 5.3.6; would have to look to be certain, but my time is so limited I'd rather not.
