Well, I've done it again. I managed to crash php and the scripts I need to run just load into Safari as text. Since my versions of Apache and PHP were out of date, I tried to install the updates. I actually followed the installation instructions, but the 1st step returns an error and the 2nd step doesn't work:

     $ ./configure --prefix=/private/etc/httpd-2.4.4
     $ make
     $ make install
     $ /private/etc/httpd-2.4.4/bin/apachectl start

When I start with the './configure --prefix=/private/etc/httpd-2.4.4', I get this message:

 server:httpd-2.4.4 tim$ ./configure --prefix=/private/etc/httpd-2.4.4

server:httpd-2.4.4 tim$ make
-bash: make: command not found
server:httpd-2.4.4 tim$

The 'make' command renders:

make: command not found

and then, the whole thing dies.

    No offense meant... but why on earth are you trying to compile Apache from source when it is apparent you have no experience (let alone the tools installed) to do so? It's a bit more involved than just launching a .exe installer (i.e. on Windows). Plus, it looks like your ./configure is failing fairly early in the process of checking for the many dependencies necessary.

    Have you tried looking for a pre-compiled binary rather than compiling from source?

      No, I haven't found anything other than the source code.

        Finally, the search succeeded.

        You'll need to install their software, and you'll need Xcode with command line access. https://developer.apple.com/xcode/.

        Beware, follow the instructions step by step. You'll wade though terminal a bit, but you don't have to be an expert. The instructions will walk you through the process. There's a whole lot of software on the site.
