Dynamically checking if username already exists

Hi,

I am a beginner with php. Sorry, if I have asked dumb questions here!

I have a login form where the users go and register themselves on the website?

When the user enters a username, how do I check whether the entered username is already in use before the user hits the submit button.

How do I go about putting this functionality together.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Use AJAX to send a request back to your server with the given username. You'd have a script on the server that takes the input, performs a SELECT statement on your database (are you even using a database?) to find if a row already contains that username, and then returns the result. The Javascript code would then interpret the response and display the appropriate result.

Thanks Brad. I found a few examples on the net. I am also learning AJAX right now. There seem to be some cool effects that are made possible by AJAX/Jquery.
