Error code that doesn't make sense.

I am new to php. On our site today, we got this error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /home3/gentech/public_html/pages/category.php on line 1

So I go to that file and it's line one where php is defined: "<?php"

How can that be an error in syntax? I'm confused.

Sounds like the error could be that this file was saved as a Unicode file with a BOM at the beginning. If this is true, try re-saving the file without the BOM.

Thank you Brad. How do I do that? I use notepad++ and I'm new to this. If I save the php file... how do I do this without the BOM?

I don't use Notepad++, but a quick Google search suggested you should look for an "Encoding" menu and select "Encode in UTF-8 without BOM."

Not yet. I am still not sure how to save it differently. I read about BOM but still not certain. I'll continue to look. Thank you!
