Retrieving results by date for id's

I want to retrieve articles for each ID in my table which are repeated, but only get the latest articles by date. I am struggling to even explain this one so maybe the following will help:

id article date

1 02/15/14
2 02/13/14
3 02/12/14
1 01/15/14
2 01/10/14
3 01/13/14

In the instance above I would want to just retrieve the first three records, I wont know the date, but I want the latest for each ID.

Any ideas?

so you want to SELECT [the] id, [and] max(date) FROM table GROUP[ed] BY id
